Crockpot Creamy French Onion Chicken and Orzo is a hearty, comforting meal featuring tender chicken, caramelized onions, and creamy orzo.
3–4 yellow onions, thinly sliced
6 tablespoons salted butter
1 ½ lb boneless chicken breasts or thighs
2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves
2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage
Kosher salt and black pepper
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 cup dry white wine
1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
2 cups sliced mushrooms
2 cups dry orzo pasta
½ cup heavy cream
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
1. For Crockpot: Layer onions, 3 tbsp butter, and chicken in slow cooker. Sprinkle thyme, sage, garlic, salt, and pepper. Pour wine and broth over chicken. Add mushrooms. Cook on low 3-4 hrs or high 1-2 hrs.
2. Preheat broiler. Remove chicken and most onions to a baking sheet.
3. Turn slow cooker to high. Stir in orzo and 1 cup water. Cover and cook 20-30 min until al dente. Stir in cream and Parmesan.
4. Top onions with remaining butter and Gruyere cheese. Broil 3-5 min until cheese melts.
5. Serve chicken and onions over orzo.
Use both chicken breasts and thighs for best flavor. Cook onions longer for richer caramelization. Adjust liquid as needed for creamy orzo. Add cream and cheese off heat. Broil cheese carefully to avoid burning.
